About Us
It’s Story Time
Our Beginnings
The Mparntwe Alice Springs Community Foundation emerged from a concern that ‘community’ in our town was being eroded, that our hope for a strong and shared future was being lost. Changing demographics and the structure of the workforce (with greater numbers of short-term workers), the impacts of COVID, and a changing and challenged economy are all contributors.
The negative impacts of the loss of our local newspaper was the catalyst for action. Local newspapers are the lifeblood of regional communities. Securing a local newspaper for Mparntwe Alice Springs was our formative project, that drew locals together to ‘build a stronger community with a shared future’.
That ‘why’ – that driving purpose – has not changed, but the vision to grow community-led, driven and funded action to create the future we want for our town and community continues to expand.
Governments can’t solve the challenges we face. They can help, but members of our community need to take responsibility for our own future rather than always looking for someone else to fix things. It can’t always be someone else’s fault or responsibility. Worldwide, community members are stepping up, stepping out and leaning in to create the community they need for a shared future, including Mparntwe Alice Springs.
Our Vision
A stronger community with a shared future.
Our Purpose
We encourage, strengthen and amplify community action for a strong community with a shared future.
Our Strategy
The three-pronged strategy to strengthen the community for a shared future is based on best-practice community development to tap into existing community resources and activities first, building on the good that is here (but too often hidden), and celebrate, support and amplify community-led action.
1
Constructive Communication & Conversations
Using the newspaper, moderated online conversations, and community forums to build progress toward a stronger community.
2
Strengthening Capacity & Leadership
So, community members pick up the challenge, gather people around them, and get on with things effectively.
3
Community & Strategic Action
Community-driven action and projects are at the heart of this foundation. Strategic projects support and drive change.
Explore our strategic approach through a comprehensive visual diagram that outlines our key objectives, methods of implementation, and expected outcomes to better serve our community.
Our Program Logic
A project logic outlines where you are, where you want to get to, and how you are going to get there. The Mparntwe Alice Springs Community Foundation has a draft ‘Theory of Change’. This theory recognises that things are never guaranteed and that assumptions and choices need to be made to work towards our ultimate goal of a stronger community and shared future. It helps identify what that would look like and how that can be measured.
Our Theory of Change has been drafted and is under review of our research advisory committee that includes experts in community development, communication, leadership, society, behaviour change and systems change. This will be refined through community engagement throughout 2024.
